What is Taekwondo?
Taekwondo is a Korean martial art and Olympic sport practiced by over 100 million individuals worldwide. Punches and kicks foster physical fitness. Breathing and meditation techniques provide focus. Our style is modern and mixed with fun and discipline!
Who can learn Taekwondo?
Anyone. Some students start as young as 4 while others come to the sport in their 70s or older. It’s a fun activity for everyone to enjoy, regardless of age, gender or culture.
Will martial arts make my child aggressive?
No. Our classes are not only about kicking, punching and grappling. We teach children techniques to avoid conflict and neutralize violence. We help them learn self control, discipline, respect and perseverance.
How safe are your classes?
At Bowen Island Taekwondo we take safety seriously. Our expert instructors show proper techniques in a step-by-step manner. Students advance at their own pace. Thorough warm-ups and no-contact sparring help ensure the safety of all.
Are you affiliated with any federations?
Yes. We are a member of the World Taekwondo Federation, the international federation governing the Olympic sport, and the BC Taekwondo Federation.
How are belts earned?
Advancement is determined by attendance, self-control, respect, knowledge of subjects and effort in each class. The more you put into your training the more you will get out of it.
How long will it take to become a black belt?
With regular attendance a black belt can be earned in 4-6 years (depending on age and commitment). But earning a black belt is not measured in time. Ability and character development are crucial along with class attendance. Remember that every student advances at their own pace.
What are the promotion test fees?
- $40 – Yellow Stripe / Yellow
- $50 – Green Stripe / Green
- $60 – Blue Stripe / Blue
- $70 – Red Stripe / Red
- $80 – Black Stripes
- $175 – Black Belt
- $425 – First Dan
- $525 – Second Dan
